TinyTableauTip – Spell Check in Desktop

A personal reflection on teaching, data literacy, and learning with the DataFam.

Yes, you read it correctly – this is something the Flerlage twins showed back in 2022 – that you could do in the web edit, with the built in browser spell check.

And since 2024.2, Spell Check is officially available on Cloud/Server as well; you can use your web browser’s built-in spell check functionality to identify spelling errors and find correct spelling suggestions on your text content, for most of the content.

But then (back in 2022) I needed to check if this also was possible to do in Desktop. And lo and behold, it’s possible, if you get a (free) version of Grammarly installed – and make sure Tableau is not blocked as an application.

I’ve used it to spell check Calculations, Captions, Headers/Titles etc. Just remember, even Grammarly finds your spelling mistakes in a i.e. Title, and you accept the fix, it won’t work, unless you have your Title window open in Edit mode. Or else, Grammarly thinks it has fixed your mistakes, but it can’t actually change it, unless those objects are in edit mode (Calculations, Captions, Titles etc).

I’ve made a short video to explain the process:
