TinyTableauTip: Rediscover Lost Data Sources in Tableau

Ever find yourself in a Tableau labyrinth, searching high and low for a specific data source you know you used somewhere? If you can remember the workbook where you last saw it, this quick tip will save you a ton of time!

Here’s the trick:

  1. Create a New Data Source: Start connecting to a new data source (it doesn’t matter what type).
  2. Navigate to “More”: In the “Connect” window, look for the “More” button. Click on it.
  3. Open the Workbook: You’ll see an option to open a Tableau workbook. Select the workbook you think your data source is hiding in.
  4. Choose Your Source: Tableau will present a dialogue box listing all the data sources used in that workbook. Select the one you were looking for, and voilà!

Why This Works:

Tableau cleverly tracks the data sources you use within each workbook. This “More” option gives you a shortcut to access those sources without manually opening the workbook and browsing all the sheets.

Bonus Tip:

If you’re unsure which workbook your data source is in, try using the search bar in the “Connect” window. Type in a few keywords related to your data source, and Tableau might just lead you right to it!

Happy data sleuthing!

I hope this TinyTableauTip helps you quickly locate those elusive data sources and get back to creating amazing visualizations in Tableau.
