TinyTableauTip: Quick & Easy Date Properties Changes in Your Data Source

Do you need to adjust how Tableau handles dates across your workbook? Don’t waste time fixing each individual date field—there’s a much faster way!

Change Date Properties at the Source

Tableau allows you to modify the default date properties for your entire data source. This means you can adjust settings like:

Default Calendar: Switch between standard and ISO week calendars (especially important if you work with ISO dates).
Week Start: Define which day of the week marks the beginning of a week in your analysis.
Fiscal Year Start: Set the starting month for your fiscal year calculations.

How to Do It:

Right-click on your data source in the Data pane.
Select “Date Properties” from the context menu.
Make your desired changes in the Date Properties dialogue box.
Click “OK.”
And that’s it! Your changes will apply to all date fields in your data source, saving you valuable time and ensuring consistency across your analysis.

Why This Matters

Correct date properties are crucial for accurate calculations, filtering, and visualizations. This tip will help you avoid common date-related errors and streamline your Tableau workflow.

Happy data vizzing!
