I was invited to speak at the Newbies Tableau User Group earlier this week.
This meetup’s theme was “Maps, Maps, and Maps,” including #TinyTableauTips from me. Over 570 people had signed up, so I had to bring my A-game to present tips to help people see and understand maps in Tableau.
But before it was my turn, Reyes Murrieta and Madeline Zook (two of the TUG’s co-leaders) presented and introduced maps and how to use them in our visualisations.
I talked about multiple tips for Maps, including:
- Creating own geographic groups
- Using Multiple Map Layers
- How to navigate in/around a map
- Removing background maps – i.e. countries you don’t have data for (to let your country shine)
- Showing one shape/country as its own next to all the other countries you have data for
- Using alternative background maps, including the built-in ones (Street, Outdoors, Satellite, etc.) and WMS maps (I used the free map from https://wms.gebco.net/mapserv?)
- How to find a specific latitude and longitude from a data point in a map
- I used data from Oslo City Bikes to show multiple layers of data and how to find the start and end stations – including a path/line between them and calculating the distance.
- I finished with some rat sightings data from New York (way too many rats there!) in a density map. Fun Fact: the brown rat – is called Rattus Norvegicus in Latin. Yeay Norway!
The entire presentation from the TUG can be found on YouTube
Some screenshots from the presentation. The entire workbook can be found on Tableau Public.
Thanks for having me! And thanks for all the great feedback from the participants!
